Fairoaks Airport near Woking in Surrey at risk of redevelopment into yet another housing estate.

It seems that almost any airfield / airport is now fair game for providing the land requirments of housing developers. Re-development plans for what was Wisley airfield in Surrey failed to be approved but not far away Fairoaks airport is now in developers sights to be a new "Garden Village".

1500 houses, industrial estate, extra traffic and a nice little earner for the developers. The result,
Historic and popular local airfield lost, increased traffic on local country lanes, increased polution, increased congestion to the adjacent village of Chobham which already struggles with through traffic.
Do we really want or need this ?

Fairoaks History
Fairoaks opened as a private airstrip in 1931, but was signed up for military use in 1936 and became RAF Fairoaks during  world war II. Used as a training airfield, with No. 18 Elementary & Reserve Flying School formed on 1 October 1937 over 6,000 pilots were trained at the airfield.  Post war the airfield reverted to private use as a flying school and aircraft maintenance operation.
Alan Mann Helicopters began operations there in 1968 after which The Alan Mann Group became the operator. The hard runway was constructed in 1979. The Alan Mann Group sold its interests in 2008 to Albermarle Fairoaks Airport Ltd which owns Fairoaks Operations Ltd, the operator. The landside buildings were owned by West Register Property until they sold their interest on the 8th December 2015 to TEREF ADP Fairoaks Limited, a company registered in Jersey.
On 25th November 2016 the airport owners announced plans to close the airport, and build a 1500 unit housing development to be known as "Fairoaks Garden Village".

Farnborough Abbey Burglary February 2014

Desecration and theft of historic objects of religious significance

There has been a serious burglary at St Michael's Abbey Farnborough. Thieves broke into the Abbey Crypt and stole historic framed prayers in French and Latin from the Napoleon Prince Imperials tomb.

The Items stolen are easily identified as coming from the Abbey.

The prayers are specific to the Prince Louis, who whilst acting with a forward scouting party was attacked and overwhelmed by a group of forty Zulu warriors. The Prince was speared in the thigh but pulled the assegai from his wound. As he turned and fired on his pursuers another assegai struck his left shoulder. The Prince tried to fight on using the assegai he had pulled from his leg, but , weakened by his wounds he sank to the ground and was overwhelmed. When recovered it was found his body had eighteen assegai wounds. He was 23 years of age, serving in South Africa with the British army under Lord Chelmsford.

Given the international significance of the Abbey and its artefacts as the burial place of a foreign head of state, together with the forensic and other evidence already gained since the crime, the perpetrators of this theft are urged to return these objects at the earliest opportunity.

If anyone is offered, or comes across these items, please contact Hampshire Police via 101.

Some things are made to last & some change a lot

Whilst  brushing my shoes this morning and noticed the makers name on my shoe brush, It was REMPLOY,  that company providing sensible employment for very many disadvantaged  people, who would not always be able to fit into everyday employment with organisations that do not understand or cater for the challenges that many people face on a daily basis.
Such a shame that government funding has been removed from Remploy, resulting in many workers or Ex workers now in a difficult position, much like the appalling " care in the community" system which leaves so much to be desired.
If you would like to know more about Remploy follow this link:    www.remploy.co.uk

I have to say that the brush I was using was part of my Royal Air Force issue Kit that I received on joining the RAF back in 1969. So how impressed am I that my brush is still providing sterling service 44 years on.
This must say something about the quality and endurance of the item.

I wonder if the same is being issued to recruits today?

As my interest in service kit was suddenly rekindled I took a look at the current recruit kit list and was amazed by the difference 44 years has made.  Baby wipes, Swimming Goggles, kit insurance  etc.. wow.
Take a look

ESSENTIAL

 Notes:
1.         Opportunity to wear civilian clothing is limited whilst at recruit training as you will be wearing uniform from the very early days of your course. In addition, locker and storage space is at a premium; so do not overdo the amount of civilian clothing you bring. Ripped, dirty or clothing bearing graphic or sexual images will not be tolerated and should not be brought to the site.
2.         Recruits are issued basic sports shoes/trainers; however, you may wear your own trainers for Physical Education lessons if they are found to be suitable by PEd staff.  They must be clean, in good condition and of the correct type for the activity being carried out. Guidance on suitable shoes will be offered.
3.         Photo-chromatic lenses in spectacles are not acceptable for ceremonial duties.
4.         Do not bring penknives or any items that could be classed as a weapon.

General:
Due to the extensive amount of Service uniform and kit issued to recruits, you are strongly advised to consider kit insurance. You will have the opportunity to take this out whilst at RAF Halton but may wish to consider extending your own or your parents’ contents insurance to cover the Service uniform and kit, which is issued. The approximate cost of your Service uniform is £1800. You will have a lot of kit to transport to your Trade Training Unit on the completion of Recruit Training, so personal belongings should be kept to a minimum.
Amigos is a small shop that is open on site selling items such as Steam irons, ironing boards as well as basic daily hygiene supplies such as shampoo and hairnets. This is solely for the use of RTS personnel and will be open during evening domestic breaks. All recruits are able to access it to make purchases.
